My name is Jill Powell, and I am a mixed media, surreal artist from Cwmbran, Gwent. After a career break from Biomedical Sciences, I progressed to art as a mature student. I always took pleasure in art as a child but pursued a scientific career after school.
Beginning with a National Diploma in Graphic Design from Pontypool Tertiary College I then went on to complete a BA(Hons) in Art Practice from University of South Wales. During this time, I developed a love of surrealism and abstract impressionism in art, esteeming the works of Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte, Joan Miro, Andre Masson, and Max Ernst
I am a member and active participant in Disability Arts Cymru, a disabled artist led charity, Solidarity of Hope, an international woman’s collective and recently the secretary of South Wales Art Collective.
Often surreal in nature, my art has evolved from my feelings and dreams and has helped me make sense of my neurodivergence. Using a mixed media approach my art practice has incorporated surrealism, sculpture, animation, humour, and the exploration of alternative realities.
My art career highlights include the illustration of a poetry book, participating in Tom Croft’s Portraits for NHS Heroes and an Antimicrobial Art Commission for Cardiff University’s Art lab which exhibited in Chapter Arts in Cardiff.
