I am RachWellbeing, a disabled, neurodiverse fine artist. Art has been my sanctuary since childhood. My background is wide-ranging. Beginning in commercial art, my path then evolved through diverse social roles and circus performance. Disability in 2008 became a pivotal moment in my life, prompting a period of reflection, change, and finally acceptance.
Living with and embracing neurodiversity and invisible disabilities, I earned a BA (hons) in ceramics, an MRes, and a PhD in inclusion and diversity. Recognised as Promising New Talent by the British Ceramic Biennial, my narrative underscores the profound intertwining of art and life, each enriching and inspiring the other profoundly. My life journey thus far epitomises the fusion of resilience, creativity, and an indomitable spirit.
I shape narratives through ceramics, sculpture, and paintings. My art is a harmonious blend of figurative and abstract elements, a dance of forms that transcends conventional boundaries. Guided by an unwavering passion and my meditative practice, my work seeks to forge profound connections with the human experience, weaving together threads of emotion, introspection, and spiritual insight. Rooted in an inclusive ethos, my creations echo an ethical, eco-conscious commitment with a proud carbon-literate stance.
My goal is not just to create art but to offer an immersive experience that resonates on a profound level. Through form and narrative, I hope to evoke a shared understanding that goes beyond words, speaking directly to the soul. My motivation stems from a sense of 'otherness' ingrained in my identity, influenced by my disabilities, spiritual beliefs, and heritage. Through art, I aim to establish connections and be seen and understood by others.
One of my main objectives is to create art that can be experienced by a diverse audience, breaking down barriers and making my creations more inclusive. Storytelling is a key element in my art, as I believe it possesses the power to unite diverse individuals, as well as emphasising the universal language of communication that art provides. Characterised by a semi-autobiographical approach, my art allows me to embrace a neurodiverse and disabled perspective authentically. I create to illuminate themes inspired by the natural world, equality, self-exploration, and conscious meditation.
My environment very much informs my artistic journey, shaping the colours, forms, and textures. My journey through life has focused heavily on self-discovery, embracing diversity and inclusivity, and an unwavering commitment to creative expression. Life to me is an exciting and often challenging adventure full of potential new connections, experiences, and personal growth. Working with clay is a meditative experience for me, allowing me to forge a profound connection with my inner creativity.
Central to my artistic narrative is the documentation of change – both physical and emotional. The interplay of movement and transformation mirrors the ebb and flow of life itself. My art resonates with the natural world, drawing parallels between the intricate ecosystems of nature and the nuanced landscapes of human emotions. My art is often a playful dance between my inner world and the external stimuli that shape my thoughts and emotions.
My creative practice extends to encompass the broader canvas of community and shared human experiences. My art is a testament to the interconnectedness of humanity, a reminder that each individual is a brushstroke contributing to the greater masterpiece.
